Medicare basics
Part A
Hospital insurance
Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care.
Part B
Medical insurance
Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and medical equipment.
Part C
Medicare Advantage
Plans offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare that bundle Part A and Part B, and often Part D. Networks and costs vary by plan.
Part D
Prescription drug coverage
Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Offered through standalone plans or included in many Medicare Advantage plans.
Key enrollment periods
- Initial Enrollment Period
- A 7-month window around your 65th birthday: the 3 months before, your birthday month, and the 3 months after.
- Annual Enrollment Period
- October 15 – December 7 each year. You can join, switch or drop Medicare Advantage and Part D plans.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
- January 1 – March 31. If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch plans or return to Original Medicare.
- Special Enrollment Periods
- Certain life events, such as moving or losing other coverage, may let you make changes outside the usual windows.
